Ranitomeya variabilis southern
Ranitomeya dart frogs are known as “thumbnail” dart frogs due to the tiny size. Unlike many other species of dart frog Ranitomeya can be kept in family groups as long as they are given the correct environment in which to thrive.
The minimum vivarium requirement for three to five Ranitomeya is 45 60 45, but bigger is always better.
Dart frogs do not require any supplemental heating or UVB, they do however need a full spectrum LED plant light to provide UVA.
Ranitomeya are a communal species who actively raise their own young, with this in mind we will not sell singletons, as they do not do well on their own.
As with all dart frogs, the risk of hybridisation is extremely high so you must not keep more than one sub species of Ranitomeya in a single tank or they will breed and create hybrids.
Dart frogs thrive in fully bioactive vivariums with live plants and a healthy clean up crew. As they require humidity of upto 100%, this is much easier to achieve with live plants.
All substrate within the vivarium should be covered by a thick layer of leaf litter to both protect the clean up crew from the frogs and to protect the frogs from the substrate - dart frogs do not like getting substrate stuck to them, it agitates their sensitive skin and can lead to stress and illness.
Feed your dart frogs flightless fruit flies every other day, the flies should be dusted with calcium at every feeding, and vitamin A once a month. Check that your supplements are in date and have been stored in the refrigerator for no longer than six months.
